Ethical recruitment: What is it, and how can I achieve it?

Ethics are a crucial part of running a business; they affect everything from brand reputation to performance and profits. Here we discuss why ethical recruitment is so important, and how employers can promote fairness and equality in their hiring processes.

What is ethical recruitment?

Ethical recruitment means maintaining moral and professional values in your day-to-day hiring practices. Here are a few features that define ethical hiring.

1- Transparency

It’s always important to be transparent with your candidates. This means being honest in job descriptions, salary estimations, and selection practices.

When promoting a job role, it’s all too easy to mislead candidates about the responsibilities and benefits they will receive. This may include setting salary estimates too high, failing to include expected overtime, or omitting certain responsibilities from vacancy listings.

While the less attractive aspects of a role may not be its biggest selling point, it’s important to remain honest and transparent with recruitment candidates. Include all responsibilities and expectations in job descriptions.

2- Candidate-focused

It’s easy to forget the importance of the candidate experience in your hiring process. Part of ethical hiring is centring your recruitment process around applicants – supporting them in the pursuit of the role in question.

This means maintaining high-quality contact with candidates, as well as providing them with all the information they need to approach the interview stage with confidence.

While filling vacancies may be the ultimate aim of hiring, don’t let this get in the way of providing a positive candidate journey.

3- Feedback & support

While your focus may lie on shortlisted/successful candidates, it’s important to provide unsuccessful applicants with feedback and support. This is a key part of ethical hiring, and has a strong effect on your employer brand reputation.

Get in touch with all candidates after the interview stage. Make sure to offer feedback to those who have been unsuccessful, and if appropriate, keep them informed of any future opportunities.

Why is ethical recruitment important?

While it may sound like a time-consuming task, maintaining an ethical recruitment process is important for a number of reasons:

how to recruit in a work from home job market

#1 – It boosts your employer brand reputation

Your employer brand is what first attracts candidates to pursue your opportunities. If this remains undefined, or attracts a negative reputation, you’ll have less chance of bringing key talent to your business.

Ethical hiring practices are a crucial part of your employer brand strategy. The more positive your recruitment journey is for candidates, the more likely they are to engage with future vacancies.

This also has a huge impact on staff retention. The stronger your employer brand appears to your colleagues, the more likely they are to stay with you for the long-run.

#2 – It helps to create an equal job market

Diversity & Inclusion has become a crucial part of HR and recruitment. By keeping hiring ethical, you help to create a fair, equal job market for talent from all backgrounds.

Not only does this benefit job-hunters – it also helps you to attract a more diverse range of talent to your workforce. This is a proven way to boost innovation, productivity, and workplace culture.

Focus on interviews and candidate selection. Make sure to eliminate any risk of unconscious bias by using anonymised hiring, and including more decision makers in the recruitment process.

#3 – It promotes employee engagement and retention

Ethical recruitment practices have an enormous impact on employee engagement and staff retention. To put it simply: the more positive your hiring journey is for candidates, the more likely they are to stay with you for the long-run.

The recruitment stage is the first impression future colleagues get of your employer brand. It’s important to get them off to the best start possible by practising ethical hiring, and focusing on a positive candidate experience.
