How to get the most out of your job boards

2nd June 2025 3 MIN READ Resources

If you’re a hiring manager, you’ll know all about the value of job boards. There are dozens of job boards, mainstream ones and niche; there’s a board for every job – the options at your disposal are almost overwhelming.

Most dispiriting, and HR and hiring managers everywhere will agree – is that just 24 hours after you post your job advert, maybe less, your job is buried below numerous other opportunities; infuriating when you’ve worked hard to get it out into the public domain – especially in this current climate when your job needs to be at the top to get spotted.

So, what can be done? In this short guide, we’ll give you our top tips to ensure you get the most out of your job boards, help your advert catch the eye in just 8 seconds and drive applications to your job opening.

How to get the most out of your job boards

Getting the most out of your job adverts

Recruitment advertising doesn’t have to be difficult. With the right strategy behind you, attracting candidates will soon be a doddle. Here we’ve taken some of our job advert top tips from our Job Board Guide to help you source, attract and hire top talent.

1. Think like a candidate

Your job advert is just that – an advert. Make sure it’s both compelling and highly visible. Think about where your ideal candidates are likely to be looking for jobs and what kind of content would appeal to them.

  • Use multiple job boards – Your ideal candidates may already be registered with a job board, so by just picking one job board, you could be missing out.
  • Advertise under your employer brand – Candidates are much more likely to apply for “branded” job adverts rather than anonymous ones. Use your logo and company name to build trust and credibility with your ad and give a precise location to help with considerations around commute times
  • Be clear – Clearly state if flexible or remote working is an option, as these are highly popular in job board searches.

At Talos360, we use our brand name on all our jobs, which has helped us increase applications by 30%

2. Get the title right

So many organisations get this one wrong. Our advice, don’t get too creative with the job title. Use a simple and, most importantly, relevant job title.

Keep it zippy and no more than 40 characters. Any longer and you’re going to lose candidates. Relevant titles are good for SEO and will ensure your job opening remains near the top of the pile. So, don’t use ‘Sales Ninja’ when you mean ‘Sales Executive’ or ‘Mortar Logistics Engineer’ when you mean ‘Labourer’.

A quick tip from us, aim to repeat the job title five times within your advert to optimise it for job boards.

3. Optimise your adverts

You need to squeeze every bit of relevant information into your advert. And it would help if you did it in an organised way.

Candidates, first and foremost, want to see a salary. In fact, without one, you’re already turning away 50% of candidates. Don’t leave this information out, whatever you do. Be sure that candidates will only be scanning your advert, so they won’t have the time to read War and Peace.

Focus on the job and what’s in it for them, not your complete company history. Ideally, your advert needs to be under 700 words – don’t lose your candidates by listing a thousand and one responsibilities.
