Executive recruitment guide: How to hire strong business leaders

Strong leadership is essential for securing your company’s bright and prosperous future. Here’s how you can manage executive recruitment to attract strong future leaders to your business:

How to manage executive recruitment campaigns…

Executive recruitment is often more complex than traditional hiring campaigns. It requires evaluation of your company’s needs, planning for the future, and identification of your workplace culture. Here’s how to make the right executive hire:

#1 – Know your company’s aims and objectives

To successfully recruit new business leaders, you’ll need to identify your company’s core aims and objectives.

You need to attract executives whose values and expectations closely resemble those of your business. Look for people who have worked with companies of your size/nature before; this is vital for moving towards your long-term aims.

#2 – Map out future growth and expansion

Before you begin your executive recruitment campaign, it’s important to map out your company’s short and long-term growth. This is a vital part of workforce planning, especially when hiring for senior roles.

Where do you see your business and its products going over the next five to ten years? How can you ensure your future leaders have the skills and resilience to support you on this journey?

#3 – Find someone your team will get along with

When hiring new business executives, it’s essential to account for the wants, needs, and expectations of your workforce. What management styles work best for them, and what may compromise their creative development?

Look for these qualities in your future business leaders; choose someone who shares the same unique values as your team. This helps to reduce the risk of staff turnover when bringing new leadership to your business – promoting future prosperity.

#4 – Choose someone who you can work with

As a business leader yourself, you’ll need to find someone who you can work alongside to reach your objectives and goals.

Could you see yourself collaborating with certain candidates on a professional level? It’s important to put working relationships and cultural compatibility before on-paper skills.

#5 – Have a strong interview and selection strategy

Successful executive recruitment requires a strong interview and selection strategy. Consider how you will attract your ideal candidates, and how interview sessions should be staged to promote engagement.

Bear in mind the factors you will use to assess candidates’ suitability. Plan interview questions in advance, and consider who should be present at individual sessions.

#6 – Include key stakeholders in the selection process

Departmental leads and business stakeholders play a key role in executive recruitment. Be sure to include senior colleagues, such as line managers and directors, when selecting leadership candidates.

You need to ensure your team feels comfortable working alongside your chosen candidate, and that they feel they’re the best person for the role. It’s all too easy to clash with your management team when bringing new leadership to your business – work to prevent this to promote future growth.
