Acclaimed physicist Professor Brian Cox has said that HR must learn to ‘celebrate being wrong’ as a way to move its strategy forward.
Speaking virtually at the CIPD Festival of Work 2021, Cox told HR professionals: ‘Humility, which is a transferable skill from science and from interaction with nature, is the key,’ highlighting the importance of recognising one’s ignorance.
Being ‘wrong’ is a natural part of human interaction
‘Everyone will disagree with you on something and that’s the sign you are free. The sign that you live in a free society is that there are people out there who disagree with what you’re saying.’
He went on to critique the level of confidence some people hold in their own methods: ‘The thing that worries me is there’s a great deal of certainty around.’
The points raised by the professor spotlight the need for a more open-minded approach to human resources – one that adapts its practices to meet the changing expectations of the workforce.
How can HR recognise its downfalls?
Part of developing a strong HR strategy is recognising areas that require improvement. This can apply to any process – from recruitment to employee engagement/wellbeing.
Review your recruitment strategy for equity and experience
Analyse your recruitment process – are you doing everything you can to ensure a fair shot for candidates of all backgrounds? Discuss how your company can open up its opportunities to a more diverse range of talent; optimise candidate attraction, screening, and selection.
Focus on providing a positive experience for your recruitment candidates. This ensures new employees get off to the best start possible with your company, while boosting your employer brand reputation.
Listen to your colleagues: Is your HR strategy in-line with best practice?
Take note of the most influential conversations happening throughout the HR field. Is your company’s strategy in-line with current best practice?
Be open to change; listen to what other professionals are doing to improve their HR strategy, and make changes to your own approach where necessary.
Are you meeting the expectations of your employees?
Your employees’ wants, needs, and expectations will change with time. It’s important to adapt your HR strategy to account for these changes.
Survey your employees regularly to gain feedback on your management strategy, and wider company culture. This will help you to identify key engagement challenges, and optimise your HR strategy to support your workforce.
Regularly review your company’s benefits package and management strategies. Recognise your downfalls, and adapt your approach to keep morale high within your workforce.
