Why your recruitment advertising isn’t working

Struggling to attract applications for your job ads? Weaknesses in your hiring campaigns can compromise the success of your talent acquisition strategy. Here’s why your recruitment advertising isn’t working, and what you can do to improve it:

#1 – You haven’t defined your employer brand

Your unique employer brand is what first attracts new candidates to your company. If this remains undefined across recruitment advertising campaigns, you will struggle to attract high-quality applications.

Your employer brand includes:

Your workplace culture

A well-defined workplace culture makes your business more attractive to potential candidates. Identify your most valuable cultural values, and promote these across job ads to attract like-minded talent to your vacancies.

Your Employee Value Proposition (EVP)

Your Employee Value Proposition (EVP) is the list of incentives and benefits given to your employees in return for their hard work. Identify which company benefits matter most to your employees, and ensure these are properly communicated in recruitment advertisements. This will make your vacancies more desirable to new talent.

#2 – You aren’t stating the salary in job ads

Failing to state the expected salary in your job ads will make them less attractive to potential candidates, leading to fewer applications. A huge 48% of candidates won’t even apply for a vacancy if the salary isn’t listed – that’s almost one in two applicants simply ignoring your opportunities.

Should I include salary in my job adverts?

Ensure an expected salary range is given at the very beginning of your job ads. Make this easily visible to candidates who may be scrolling through numerous listings. This will help to boost the success of your recruitment advertising campaigns.

#3 – You’re advertising in the wrong places

It’s important to choose the right platforms to advertise your vacancies. If you’re sticking to industry-specific job boards, or equally generalised careers sites, you’ll struggle to attract many candidates.

Advertise your vacancies across a range of platforms, including social media, industry-specific job sites, careers pages, and brand websites. This will give you greater reach over more of the best talent in your sector.

#4 – Your audience is too niche

While you might have an image of your ideal candidate in mind, advertising to a niche audience can limit the success of your hiring campaigns.

Stop ghosting job applicants

This may include only advertising on specialist websites, using too many ‘killer questions’ in application forms, or using exclusive terms like ‘mature’, ‘experienced’, or ‘graduate’.

The right candidates often come from the places you least expect; make sure to attract a wider range of talent to maximise your options.

#5 – You aren’t providing enough information

While it may be tempting to keep job ads short and sweet, it’s equally as important to provide candidates with all the information they need. This includes job responsibilities, expected salary, working hours, desired skills, and workplace culture/benefits.

It’s especially important to give potential candidates insight into your workplace culture, as this is what makes your vacancies stand out from the crowd.

Find a happy medium that works for your candidates; bullet point key details, and link to more information within advertising copy.
