Should I include salary in job adverts?

Attracting new talent can be difficult – especially if you’re limited to what you can disclose in job adverts. Here we discuss the importance of stating the salary in your job ads, and what you risk by failing to do so:

Why you should include salary in your job adverts…

Unsure whether you should include salary estimations in your job ads? Here are some of the key reasons why you should always state the salary to your candidates…

#1 – 48% of candidates won’t apply unless salary is stated

Research by Talos360 showed that an enormous *48% of candidates would not apply for a role unless the salary was indicated. That means potentially losing out on half of your company’s target talent audience!

With talent attraction being as difficult as it is, the last thing employers need is to inhibit their recruitment campaigns any further. For the sake of candidate engagement, it’s always important to include salary figures in your job ads!

#2 – Failing to include salary will attract incompatible candidates

Screening and engaging incompatible applicants is almost always a waste of recruiters’ time. Failing to include salary figures in job posts risks attracting candidates who do not fit your hiring criteria.

Candidates have varying expectations when it comes to salary banding. If this is not approached right away, you’ll end up with higher candidate turnover once the salary is disclosed.

#3 – Keeping up with job market competition

The job market is a competitive place for both employers and their candidates. If your competitors make a habit of stating salary estimations, while your business doesn’t, you’re bound to lose out on valuable candidates.

If the salary isn’t stated, candidates may assume you’re paying less than the going rate. While this is sometimes the case, you could well be offering the same – if not more – than your competitors. This will only work in your favour if you include salary figures in your job listings.

“Why don’t hiring managers want to state the salary?”

While it may seem like a no-brainer to always state the salary, some hiring managers are anxious about publishing this information. Here’s why this could be the case:

  • They’re worried that current employees will ask for a raise
  • They worry that salary figures take away from the opportunity itself
  • They may wish to leave salary open to discussion with the right candidate
  • They’re scared of overpaying for new talent

While these reasons are understandable, they can often be resolved with the right market research strategy. As long as your offer stands in-line with the going rate, you rarely have anything to lose – but almost always much to gain – by including salary estimations.
