The UK is being swept by a ‘great resignation’, as thousands of employees leave their roles for pastures new. While this may sound like a concerning event for employers, it’s actually possible to use it to your advantage!
Here’s how you can make the most of ‘the great resignation’, attracting the best new talent to join your team…
What is the ‘great resignation?’
The HR industry has described a ‘great resignation’ throughout the UK job market, as employers see a surge of departures from their workforce.
To put it simply, more employees are leaving their roles than ever before – adding to the challenges created by the ‘talent shortage’ in the employment market.
Why is the ‘great resignation’ happening?
There are a number of factors that have contributed to the ‘great resignation’ in the UK’s job market. Here’s why we’re seeing more employees leaving their roles for new opportunities…

Issue 1- The flexibility of remote working
The flexibility offered by remote working has given candidates more options than ever when searching for work.
An employers’ geographical location is no longer an issue for candidates, meaning professionals don’t need to relocate/commute to find new opportunities.
This has created a ‘thirst’ for progression within the national workforce, with employees looking for opportunities in more places than ever before.
Issue 2- Intense growth post-COVID
The lifting of worldwide COVID-19 restrictions has seen businesses entering periods of intense growth, with many seeking new talent to expand their workforce.
This has created a large number of vacancies in the international job market, giving workers a range of opportunities to choose from.
Companies are also using headhunting strategies to attract new talent; approaching employees with competitive job offers makes them more likely to leave their current employer.
Issue 3- High demand for talent making job offers more competitive
It’s an applicants’ job market at the moment; talent is in high demand, and employers are offering candidates more incentives than ever before to join their teams.
This includes an increase in starting salaries for new employees, as well as a greater focus on workplace benefit schemes.
Employees can’t be blamed for changing roles if they’re met with an attractive offer from another employer.
Four ways to take advantage of the great resignation
While the ‘great resignation’ may seem like a worrying time for employers, it’s actually possible to turn it to your advantage!
Here’s what you can do to attract and retain new talent in the current job market:
#1 – Corner the market: offer a competitive employee benefits package

The key to attracting talent in the current climate is to make your vacancies more appealing than the competition. This means focusing on your company culture, salary estimates, and most importantly – your employee benefits package.
Find out what employers in your sector are offering to new employees, and consider how you can make your offers more appealing. This is also a great way to assess how your current benefits package measures up to the competition.
Are there any key benefits offered by other employers that aren’t included in your current package? Are there any areas in which your company comes out on top? Optimise your Employee Value Proposition (EVP), and shout about your unique workplace values to win over new talent.

#2 – Get in there first: speed up your hiring turnaround!

The speed of your hiring process has a huge impact on your ability to attract new talent. The sooner you can respond to applications, and progress candidates to the next hiring stage, the less you risk them being picked up by another employer.
To do this, you’ll need to evaluate the current tools and resources used in your hiring strategy. Does your hiring team have the capacity to respond to applicants quickly, and keep them engaged?
Upgrade your HR tech toolkit; use applicant tracking system (ATS) to keep track of your candidates, and process applications more quickly. Make sure to use automated email updates to ensure every candidate receives a response to their application.
Consider switching to video screening/interviewing, as this allows you to engage a large number of candidates in a shorter period of time. Think of the benefits of a ‘next-day’ virtual interview, rather than making candidates wait weeks for an in-person meeting.
#3 – Promote your vacancies to newly available talent

An increase in resignations means a greater number of candidates available for new opportunities. Promote your vacancies across all the best platforms for maximum potential.
Be sure to use social media, online job boards, and branded careers sites to engage new talent – if you don’t reach out, someone else will! Utilise a multi-posting advertising tool to ensure your vacancies are promoted in all the right places.
Optimise your job ads for the current market; include details of your unique employee benefits, company culture, and development opportunities.
Try to include the estimated salary in your job ads; 49% of candidates won’t even consider a role if the expected salary isn’t stated! *

#4 – Deliver a talent-winning candidate recruitment journey

First impressions count; don’t overlook the candidate experience when developing your hiring process!
The way candidates experience your recruitment process has a huge impact on their decision to either accept/reject your final offer. Make sure applicants are kept in the loop throughout every stage of their hiring journey, with personalised email and SMS updates.
Give candidates fast feedback on their application – nobody wants to be waiting weeks for a response!
Lastly, focus on your onboarding process – give new recruits the best start possible with your brand. This helps to ensure they stay with your business for the long run, instead of being swayed by other opportunities.
