Remote hiring: How to do it properly

Hiring remotely can be a challenge. However, with the right strategy, and the correct tools at hand, you can maintain an effective recruitment process even when operating remotely. Here’s how you and your team can manage remote hiring successfully…

How to manage remote hiring

In order to get the most out of remote hiring, it’s important to adapt your HR strategy to the change in circumstances. Here are our top tips for remote recruitment:

#1 – Upgrade your HR tech toolkit

Virtual recruitment software has made it easier than ever for employers to manage hiring remotely. Make life easier for your HR team by upgrading your HR tech toolkit.

There are a number of accessible remote hiring tools on the market, including:

Assess the options carefully to identify which software best suits the hiring needs of your company.

#2 – Plan video interview questions in advance

It’s a common misconception that video interviews are less effective than their face-to-face alternative. When planned correctly, virtual sessions can provide greater accessibility for you and your candidates, while maintaining a high-quality recruitment journey.

Plan video interview sessions ahead of time. Give candidates a choice of interview slots, identify the best questions to ask, and decide who should be present at each session.

Virtual interviews are much more than a remote hiring tool; they increase accessibility to candidates and colleagues facing geographical/scheduling challenges. They’re also a great tool for promoting D&I – enabling more key decision-makers to be involved in the selection process.

#3 – Provide an effective candidate journey

A strong candidate journey is essential for giving new employees the best start possible with your business. It also helps to maintain your employer brand reputation – promoting your status as an ‘employer of choice’.

Ensure candidates remain in-the-loop throughout their hiring journey with regular, personalised SMS/Email updates. Provide a quick turnaround from application to interview; your opportunity may not be the only one on candidates’ minds.

Give candidates feedback on their application and interview performance. This not only serves as good hiring etiquette, but ensures applicants are given the support they need to demonstrate their skills and values.

#4 – Communicate with your remote candidates

When hiring remotely, it’s more important than ever to keep communication flowing with your candidates. Ensure they are updated regularly on the progress of their application, including pre/post-interview, and throughout the selection process.

SMS/Email scheduling tools can be used to send automated, personalised updates to your applicants. This ensures no candidate slips through the net, while saving time for your HR team.

#5 – Have a remote onboarding & training plan ready

Once you have selected your new recruit, it’s important to have a strong plan in place for remote onboarding. Send out employer brand handbooks/welcome packs in plenty of time, and ensure recruits remain engaged right up until their first day.

20% of employee turnover happens in the first 45 days of a new role. This makes it crucial to provide a strong onboarding journey – especially when hiring remotely.

Facilitate video meetings with colleagues and key stakeholders to welcome new employees to the business, and provide in-depth training documents to bring them up to speed. Make sure they feel comfortable with key processes, and offer high-quality support if and when needed.

Create an employee onboarding checklist for their first few weeks and months. Check in regularly to review their progress with training and onboarding resources. This will allow you to offer any additional support required, and maintain a strong remote training strategy.
