Should you use ChatGPT for recruiting?

How to use ChatGPT for recruiting

There are very few HR teams that are actually satisfied with their hiring process.

Whether it’s to reduce time to hire or improving the quality of candidates, HR professionals are always looking for ways to improve their hiring process, and with the ongoing rise in AI, people are increasingly turning to ChatGPT for a quick, efficient solution to their problems.

Chatgpt certainly isn’t the only generative AI tool out there. Google Gemini and Bing’s Co-pilot are both examples of tools HR teams are utilising. But as one of the most popular, we’re focusing solely on ChatGPT.

The question is, can you actually use ChatGPT for recruiting? It might not be capable of taking over the entire hiring process quite yet, but ChatGPT is still a great tool for recruiters.

From generating job adverts to creating employee onboarding material for your new starters, AL can be an exceptional tool for HR teams.

7 ways to use Chat GPT for recruiting

Whether you’re already using AI tools to help your hiring, or the idea of using ChatGPT for recruiting is a new concept, below are 7 ways you can use ChatGPT for recruiting that will help you perform in today’s job market.

1. Generate job adverts with ChatGPT

The first and most popular way HR uses ChatGPT for recruiting is to compose job adverts for vacant roles. It’s tough enough as it is to stand out on popular job boards like Indeed, so without inspiring and engaging job adverts, how do you expect to get any bites?

Using ChatGPT is a great tool for creating engaging and informative copy to get applicants interested in your roles and to get the most out of job boards. When generating content for your business make sure to proof any AI content so it matches your brand’s tone of voice, and to catch any bias shown in the copy.

2. Generating job descriptions

Just as important as job adverts, your job description needs to be well-written, informative and, most importantly, engaging! Whether you use ChatGPT to write a job description from scratch or simply want to enhance an existing document, AI can be an incredibly helpful tool.

Talos360’s generative AI tool is the perfect tool to generate your job adverts and descriptions. Built into Talos ATS, our generative AI allows users to generate a relevant and comprehensive job description, so you can effectively target the candidate you want for your vacant roles.

3. Generate email and SMS messages

Keeping candidates updated and engaged throughout the hiring process is tough, but no one likes being kept in the dark or, worse, being ghosted by a recruiter. To prevent this from happening, HR teams are increasingly using ChatGPT to generate engaging comms to keep candidates informed through each stage of the recruitment process.

4. Optimise your offer emails with ChatGPT.

Another way HR is using ChatGPT for recruiting is to generate and optimise employee offer letters. Everyone experiences writer’s block, and it can really slow you down, especially when hiring for multiple roles. By using ChatGPT and other generative AI tools, you can create or enhance offer letters in seconds.

5. Candidate survey generation

Find out what your candidates really think about your hiring process by generating candidate survey questions in ChatGPT and distributing them to previous and current candidates. You can also input non-confidential responses from your survey into ChatGPT to identify trends in the data.

6. Generate candidate rejection emails

No one likes to receive a rejection email, and no recruiter likes writing them either. Luckily, ChatGPT doesn’t have feelings (we think), so it will have no problem composing your rejection emails for you. Just make sure to check them before sending them to unsuccessful candidates to ensure they are professional and sincere.

7. Onboarding and beyond

A great example of utilising ChatGPT for recruiting is to use it to generate your own onboarding checklist or FAQ document specific to your newly filled roles. Ensure your prompt highlights essential questions new employees would like to know, including benefits, dress codes, who they are reporting to, and any amenities close to the office.

ChatGPT prompt for onboarding checklist:

ChatGPT, we are (Insert Business), and we’ve just hired a new (Job Title), (Full Name). They are new to the organisation, so I want you to create a comprehensive onboarding guide for them in a very welcoming tone, including information about our company culture, benefits, and resources. Follow this document for reference and all the details you need to include. Don’t forget to congratulate them on this new opportunity.

Do’s and Don’ts for using ChatGPT for recruiting

Do

  • Look at ChatGPT’s privacy policy before using
  • Be specific in what you’re entering into your prompt
  • Review any AI-generated copy before using it – make sure to sense-check your generated content

Don’t

  • Over rely on generated content – it may not always be grammatically correct
  • Enter sensitive candidate or organisational data
  • Make any hiring decisions based solely on AI – we’re not quite there yet with AI, so leave the candidate selection for the experts

Benefits of using ChatGPT for recruiting

1. Take over manual process

Automation walked so AI could run, and that’s exactly what it is doing. From taking over candidate data entry, spotting trends in candidate interviews or assessments and creating detailed, informative FAQs, AI is doing a great job at taking over the repetitive and time-consuming tasks hiring managers often spend hours doing.

2. Improve candidate experience

From replacing chatbots and answering candidates’ FAQs instantly to helping to generate candidate communications so you can provide the best candidate experience possible, there are plenty of ways you can use ChatGPT for recruiting.

3. Content generation

An obvious but crucial benefit of using ChatGPT for recruiting is the unmatched ability to generate content almost instantly. Job descriptions, adverts, interview questions, offer emails, onboarding instructions…you name it, ChatGPT can generate it.

And it’s not just HR teams that can benefit from ChatGPT, 70% of business owners believe ChatGPT will help them quickly generate content for their business. So if you’re not using ChatGPT for recruitment, the question is, WHY?!

Drawbacks of using ChatGPT for recruitment

1. AI hallucinations

We’re all for AI in recruitment, but we need to be conscious about the type of content we’re taking from ChatGPT and other AI tools because they have a tendency to hallucinate…

Whether it’s down to unclear prompts, a lack of real-world understanding or false data, it’s something you need to be aware of when using ChatGPT for recruiting.

2. Factual inaccuracies

Whilst ChatGPT and other AI tools like Claude.AI and RYTR are often correct in the content they generate, they are never 100% accurate, and they are capable of making a mistake or two in their answers.

Again, this could be down to outdated or inaccurate data, but it is also ChatGPT’s objective to give a response even if the necessary information isn’t available.

3. Security and privacy concerns

Whether you’re using ChatGPT for recruitment or for personal use, it’s crucial that confidential information is never shared with the generative AI tool. Whether that’s candidates’ personal data or confidential data on CVs, keep it secure by avoiding using ChatGPT and other generative AI tools.

Why should you avoid sharing confidential data with ChatGPT?

  • OpenAI may share your chat history with third parties
  • There are regular security breaches
  • ChatGPT doesn’t inform users whose data it collects to provide its answers
  • ChatGPT logs every conversation you have with it

4. Bias in answers

As well as factual inaccuracies, ChatGPT has also been known to produce outputs that demonstrate clear bias, so when using ChatGPT for recruiting, make sure to check the content and check again!
